In
spite of the new structurings, this region remains as
economic and industrial axis. From the years of the postwar
period, has faced serious structural difficulties and
a social crisis. Three great sectors are basic in their
economy: coal, steel and the textile branch. On the other
hand, the Northwestern Europe connection with the British
islands contributes to the importance of being a communications
center with the consequent infrastructures development
and services. The tunnel under the English Channel and
the TGV are clear exponents.
